About the song

“LOVE” is a timeless ballad that resonates through the ages, originally composed by Bert Kaempfert and Milt Gabler. It found its definitive rendition in the velvety voice of Nat King Cole, featured on his 1965 studio album aptly titled ‘LOVE’.

The song’s essence lies in its simplicity and evocative lyrics, crafted by Milt Gabler to complement Kaempfert’s soulful melody. Produced under the meticulous guidance of Lee Gillette, the recording features a standout trumpet solo performed by Bobby Bryant, adding a poignant layer to Cole’s heartfelt delivery.

Before its iconic rendition by Nat King Cole, “LOVE” debuted as an instrumental track on Kaempfert’s album ‘Blue Midnight’ in 1964, foreshadowing its later incarnation as a vocal masterpiece.

Nat King Cole’s international releases of the ‘LOVE’ album span multiple languages, showcasing his versatility and global appeal. Among these, the song was recorded in Japanese (blending English lyrics), Italian, German, Spanish, and French. Notably, in French, it was renamed “Je Ne Repartirai Pas,” with lyrics translated by Jean Delleme, further expanding its cultural footprint.

The song’s enduring popularity was revitalized when British singer Joss Stone covered “LOVE” for a Coco Mademoiselle fragrance advertisement by Chanel. This campaign, directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley, premiered on major networks in 2007, setting Stone’s rendition on a modern stage.

Joss Stone’s cover was digitally released on September 18, 2007, charting at number 100 on the UK Singles Chart and number 75 on the Swiss Singles Chart. Her interpretation later appeared as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of her third studio album, ‘Introducing Joss Stone’ (2007), and in the compilation album ‘The Best of Joss Stone 2003–2009’ (2011), affirming its lasting appeal.

In a touching moment of musical synergy, Stone performed a duet of “LOVE” alongside Natalie Cole at Frosted Pink, a charity concert dedicated to raising awareness for women’s cancer. This heartfelt performance, held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California on October 6, 2007, and broadcasted on ABC on October 14, 2007, highlighted the song’s power to inspire and unite across generations and genres.

“LOVE” remains not just a song, but a testament to the enduring magic of music, transcending language and time to touch hearts around the world.

Lyrics

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don’t break it
Love was made for me and you

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don’t break it
Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you
