About the song

“Let’s Hang On!” is an iconic track that exemplifies the vibrant sound of the mid-1960s, skillfully brought to life by The Four Seasons. Released in 1965, this song was crafted by the prolific songwriting trio of Bob Crewe, Sandy Linzer, and Denny Randell. It became a notable hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking The Four Seasons’ highest chart position since their 1964 hit, “Rag Doll.” The song’s success reaffirmed the group’s prominence in the music scene, showcasing their unique blend of pop and rock influences.

The track stands out for its innovative recording techniques and dynamic production. It features a compelling two-line introduction by lead vocalist Frankie Valli, setting the stage for a powerful performance characterized by its energetic tempo and engaging rhythm. The song employs a distinctive arrangement, including the use of two fuzz guitars—one delivering low notes and the other providing high notes on a fuzz bass. The chorus is a standout element, driven by catchy hooks and Valli’s signature falsetto, complemented by backing vocals that add depth and counterpoint to the lead.

“Let’s Hang On!” was also notable as the final hit to feature bass singer Nick Massi, who left the group shortly after the release. His departure marked a transition for the band, with Charles Calello temporarily filling in before Joe Long took over as Massi’s permanent replacement. This period of change did not deter the group’s success, as they continued to record prolifically, both as The Four Seasons and in support of Valli’s solo career.

The song’s appeal extended beyond the American charts, achieving a No. 4 position in the UK. Billboard praised the track for its “hard-driving dance rhythm,” while Cash Box described it as a “hard-rockin’ fast-moving rhythmic ode,” capturing the essence of a lucky man reveling in the joy of meeting his ideal partner.

The song’s influence persisted through various cover versions over the years. Notably, Jan & Dean included their rendition on the 1966 album *Filet Of Soul*. Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon offered their version in 1969, reaching No. 36 on the UK singles chart. Australian group Dove provided their take in 1975, and British doo-wop band Darts achieved a No. 11 spot with their 1980 cover. The song was also revisited by British band Shooting Party in 1990 and later by The Manhattan Transfer in 1995, with Frankie Valli himself contributing to their version.

“Let’s Hang On!” remains a testament to The Four Seasons’ enduring legacy and their ability to craft memorable, genre-defining hits. Its blend of engaging rhythm, innovative production, and captivating vocal performances has cemented its place as a classic in the annals of 1960s pop music.

Lyrics

There ain’t no good in our goodby-in’
True love takes, a lot of tryin’ oh I’m cryin’
Let’s hang on, to what we’ve got
Don’t let go girl, we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
(Hang on, hang on, hang on)
To what we’ve got
(Do-do, do-do, do-do)
You say you’re gonna go and call it quits
Gonna chuck it all and break our love to bits
(Breakin’ up) I wish you’d never said it (breakin’ up)
No, no we’ll both regret it
That little chip of diamond on your hand
Ain’t a fortune baby but you know it stands
(For your love) A love to tie and bind us (such a love)
We just can’t leave behind us
Baby (don’t you go) Baby (oh no no) Baby
Sta-ay, let’s hang on
To what we’ve got
Don’t let go girl, we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
(Hang on, hang on, hang on)
To what we’ve got
(Do-do, do-do, do-do)
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do
I’d pay any price to get in good with you
(Patch it up) Give me a second turning (patch it up)
Don’t cool off while I’m burning
You’ve got me cryin dyin’ at your door
Don’t shut me out let me in once more
(Open up) Your arms I need to hold you (open up)
Your heart oh, girl I told you
Baby (don’t you go) Baby (oh no no) Baby
Sta-ay
Let’s hang on (girl) to what we’ve got (girl)
Don’t let go girl, we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
(Hang on, hang on, hang on)
To what we’ve got
(Do-do, do-do, do-do)
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh…
