About the song

“My Eyes Adored You” is a classic song from 1974, written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. Originally recorded by The Four Seasons, the song faced initial challenges in its release. After Motown hesitated to put it out, the recording was purchased by lead singer Frankie Valli for $4,000. Despite rejections from major labels like Capitol and Atlantic, Valli managed to release the song through Private Stock Records. Notably, the label’s founder, Larry Uttal, chose to feature only Valli’s name on the release.

The single debuted in November 1974 and quickly became a hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1975. It also climbed to number two on the Easy Listening chart and was ranked as the No. 5 song of 1975 by Billboard.

For Frankie Valli, “My Eyes Adored You” marked his first number one hit as a solo artist. It held the top spot for one week before being replaced by “Lady Marmalade” by Labelle, another hit co-written by Crewe and Nolan. The song’s success was praised by critics, with Cash Box highlighting Valli’s smooth vocals and the song’s lush instrumentation, and Record World noting it as a significant comeback for Valli.

The song’s popularity led to a renewed interest in The Four Seasons, contributing to their signing with Warner Bros. Records. The single’s success was further reflected in its strong performance on international charts, including a number one spot in New Zealand and top five positions in Australia and the UK.

“My Eyes Adored You” remains a beloved classic, remembered for its gentle melody and Valli’s memorable performance, and continues to be celebrated in various covers and tributes.

Lyrics

My eyes adored you
Though I never laid a hand on you
My eyes adored you
Like a million miles away from me
You couldn’t see how I adored you
So close, so close and yet so far
Carried your books from school
Playin’ make believe you’re married to me
You were fifth grade, I was sixth when we came to be
Walking home every day over Bonnicut Bridge and Bay
‘Til we grew into the me and you
Who went our separate ways
My eyes adored you
Though I never laid a hand on you
My eyes adored you
Like a million miles away from me
You couldn’t see how I adored you
So close, so close and yet so far
Headed for city lights
Climbed the ladder up to fortune and fame
I worked my fingers to the bone
Made myself a name
Funny, I seem to find
That no matter how the years unwind
Still I reminisce about the girI miss
And the love I left behind
My eyes adored you
Though I never laid a hand on you
My eyes adored you
Like a million miles away from me
You couldn’t see how I adored you
So close, so close and yet so far
All my life I will remember (Though I never laid a hand on you)
How warm and tender we were way back then (My eyes adored you)
Whoa-whoa, baby (Like a million miles away from me)
(You couldn’t see how I adored you)
Oh the feeling, sad regrets (So close)
I know I won’t ever forget you, my childhood friend (So close and yet so far)
My eyes adored you
Though I never laid a hand on you
My eyes adored you
Like a million miles away from me
You couldn’t see how I adored you
So close, so close and yet so far
My eyes adored you
Though I never laid a hand on you
My eyes adored you
