About the song

“When You Say Nothing at All” is a memorable country song written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. The song’s journey from creation to fame is a testament to its heartfelt simplicity and emotional resonance.

The story behind the song is quite humble. Overstreet and Schlitz were struggling to find inspiration for their next song when, in a moment of frustration, they created “When You Say Nothing at All.” They were not initially impressed with the result, but the song caught the attention of Keith Whitley. Known for his keen ear for great music, Whitley was determined to record it, believing in its potential. He had previously enjoyed success with another Overstreet-Schlitz composition, Randy Travis’ hit “On the Other Hand.”

Released as the follow-up single to Whitley’s hit “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “When You Say Nothing at All” quickly gained traction. It entered the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart on September 17, 1988, and climbed steadily until it reached the top position on December 24, 1988. This achievement marked Whitley’s second number-one single and was part of a remarkable series of five consecutive chart-toppers for him. Tragically, Whitley passed away from alcohol poisoning on May 9, 1989, before he could fully enjoy his success.

The song’s touching delivery earned Whitley acclaim from both fans and critics. In 2004, it was ranked 12th on CMT’s 100 Greatest Love Songs, a testament to its enduring impact. As of February 2015, it had sold 599,000 digital copies in the U.S., further cementing its place in country music history.

Following Whitley’s version, the song saw various successful renditions. Alison Krauss & Union Station released their version in 1995, marking their first solo top-10 country hit. Irish singer Frances Black’s 1996 version became a hit in Ireland, drawing the attention of pop singer Ronan Keating. Keating’s 1999 version was a major success, reaching number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand.

Through its various performances, “When You Say Nothing at All” remains a cherished piece of country music, celebrated for its emotional depth and timeless appeal.

Lyrics

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
Yeah, you say it best
When you say nothing at all
All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near you drown out the crowd
Old Mister Webster could never define
What’s being said between your heart and mine
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
Yeah, you say it best
When you say nothing at all
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
Yeah, you say it best
When you say nothing at all
