About the song

Released on October 18, 1971, “We Go Together” marks the debut studio album of country music legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette as a duo. This album, released under Epic Records, is significant for several reasons. It was not only the first collaboration between Jones and Wynette but also Jones’ initial project with Epic Records and its renowned producer, Billy Sherrill. This was a pivotal moment for Jones, who had to break a substantial contract with Musicor to join his wife at Epic. According to Jones’ memoir, he paid a staggering $300,000 to make this transition, highlighting the importance of this new chapter in his career.

Before “We Go Together,” Jones and Wynette had been performing together since their marriage in 1969 but had been limited by recording contract restrictions. While Tammy had previously contributed background vocals on some of George’s earlier tracks, this album represented their first opportunity to record as a duo. Despite their previous work together, both Jones and Sherrill were initially apprehensive about their collaboration. Sherrill, known for his role in developing the Countrypolitan sound—a smooth blend of pop and country—was concerned about Jones’ high-pitched vocal style. However, their collaboration soon proved successful, with Sherrill adapting Jones’ singing style to fit a deeper tone that better suited his vision.

The album features a collection of songs celebrating fresh and exhilarating love. Sherrill meticulously selected tracks that reflected the couple’s new life together. Among the highlights are “It’s So Sweet” and “Never Cold,” the latter being a song George had recorded earlier with Musicor. The album also includes a poignant cover of “Just A Memory” by Jack Clement, originally a hit for Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton.

Jones and Wynette’s chemistry is evident throughout the album, and their collaboration quickly gained popularity. The first single from the album, “Take Me,” a song Jones had previously released solo, became a Top 10 hit, further cementing their status as one of the most compelling duos in country music.

“We Go Together” represents a significant turning point for George Jones and Tammy Wynette. It showcases their personal and professional union, capturing their heartfelt performances and marking the beginning of a successful era together in the country music scene.

Lyrics

The places where we used to meet, we go together
Step by step like shoes on the feet, we go together
Just like the sand out in the sea, what good is sugar if you have no tea
What good’re you if you don’t have me, we go together.

That old feeling we used to get even feels better
There was a girl you made me forget the day I met her
Just like the tears in a baby’s eyes, just like the stars up in the sky
Like icecream and an apple pie, we go together.

We go together like the storm and rain
Just like the fire that needs the flame
Just like the picture needs the frame
We go together.

We go together like the moon and June
Just like the fork needs the spoon
Just like the song that needs the tune
We go together.

[Instrumental]

We go together.

[Instrumental]

We go together.

Yeah, the places where we used to meet, we go together
Step by step like shoes on the feet, we go together
Just like the sand out in the sea, what good is sugar if you have no tea
What good’re you if you don’t have me, we go together.

We go together like the storm and rain
Just like the fire that needs the flame
Just like the picture needs the frame
We go together.

We go together like the moon and June
Just like the fork needs the spoon
Just like the song that needs the tune
We go together…
