West later reflected on his decision to let Holly take on the song, stating that it was an opportunity he did not want to miss, even if it meant potentially passing up the chance to record it himself.

Other artists who have covered the song include Bobby Vee, Jackie DeShannon, and Los Lobos, who recorded it for the film *La Bamba* in 1987. In 1979, the song was revived by Starbabies in a power ballad rendition that charted on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
