About the song

Paul & Paula’s “Hey Paula,” a timeless American pop ballad released in 1962, is a testament to the enduring power of simple, heartfelt storytelling. This iconic song, which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963, captured the hearts of listeners with its infectious melody and relatable lyrics.

The song’s origins are as charming as its message. Written by Ray Hildebrand, a student at Howard Payne University, “Hey Paula” was inspired by a local radio hit and the Annette Funicello song “Tall Paul.” Hildebrand enlisted his friend Jill Jackson, the niece of his landlord, to join him in recording the song. Their impromptu performance at a local radio station sparked such enthusiasm that they decided to pursue a professional recording.

With the help of producer Major Bill Smith, Paul & Paula brought their vision to life in a Fort Worth studio. The song’s success was immediate, and it quickly caught the attention of the larger Philips Records label. Under the moniker Paul and Paula, the duo released “Hey Paula,” featuring a talented group of musicians including Marvin Montgomery, Guy Parnell, Hargus Robbins, Little Caesar, and Ronnie Dawson.

The song’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to evoke nostalgia and connect with listeners on a personal level. The simple, declarative lyrics express the longing and admiration of a young man for the girl of his dreams. Coupled with the catchy melody and the duo’s heartfelt delivery, “Hey Paula” became a cultural phenomenon, leaving an indelible mark on the pop music landscape.

Lyrics

Hey, hey, Paula
I want to marry you
Hey, hey, Paula
No one else could ever do
I’ve waited so long for school to be through
Paula, I can’t wait no more for you
My love, my love
Hey, Paul
I’ve been waiting for you
Hey, hey, hey, Paul
I want to marry you too
If you love me true
If you love me still
Our love will always be real
My love, my love
True love means planning a life for two
Being together the whole day through
True love means waiting and hoping that soon
Wishes we’ve made will come true
My love, my love
Hey, hey, Paula
I’ve been waiting for you
Hey, hey, hey, Paul
I want to marry you too
True love means planning a life for two
Being together the whole day through
True love means waiting and hoping that soon
Wishes we’ve made will come true
My love, my love
