About the song

The Danleers was an American doo-wop group in the 1950s. They were a quintet hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Jimmy Weston was the lead singer, and the group was named after their manager, Danny Webb, who wrote their most famous number, “One Summer Night” .

Their one big hit single (and their debut single), “One Summer Night” (b/w “Wheelin and A-Dealin'”), reached #4 on the Billboard Black Singles chart, and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958. The single sold over one million copies. The song is a romantic ballad about a summer night of love, featuring Weston’s smooth vocals and a saxophone solo. The song has been covered by many artists, such as The Diamonds, The Chimes, The Dells, and Ariel Pink .

The Danleers continued to record for several labels, such as Mercury, Epic, and Everest, but they never repeated the success of “One Summer Night”. They disbanded in the early 1960s, but Weston reformed the group in the 1980s with new members. They performed at oldies shows and festivals until Weston’s death in 2002 .

“One Summer Night” is considered a classic of the doo-wop genre, and it has been featured in many movies and TV shows, such as American Graffiti, Stand by Me, The Wonder Years, and A Bronx Tale .
