About the song

A teenage boy, scribbling lyrics in a notebook, had no idea he was about to create a timeless classic. Maurice Williams, a 16-year-old from Lancaster, South Carolina, penned “Little Darlin’,” a song that would not only define his career but also become a cornerstone of the doo-wop genre.

Inspired by a book he was writing, Williams envisioned a tune with a distinctive Latin rhythm. He enlisted his high school friends, the Gladiolas, to bring his vision to life. The song, originally titled “Little Darlin’/ The Beginning,” was recorded in January 1957 and released shortly after on Excello Records. The track featured Fred Mangum’s soaring falsetto and Williams’ spoken bridge, adding depth and character to the catchy melody.

While the Gladiolas’ version made a modest impact, reaching No. 11 on the R&B charts, it was the Diamonds’ cover that truly propelled “Little Darlin'” to stardom. The Canadian doo-wop group’s rendition climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the most popular songs of 1957. Their version, often considered superior to the original, captured the essence of the song with its polished harmonies and energetic performance.

“Little Darlin'” stands as a testament to the enduring power of music. Its infectious melody, catchy lyrics, and the nostalgic charm of doo-wop have made it a beloved classic for generations. Whether you’re a fan of the original Gladiolas version or prefer the Diamonds’ iconic cover, “Little Darlin'” continues to resonate with listeners of all ages.

Lyrics

Ah, ya ya ya ya, ya ya ya ya, ya ya ya ya
Little darling oh little darling
O-oh where a-are you?
My lover I was wronger
To try to love two
Ahh uha uha uha uha
Knowing well that my lover
Was just for you uh only you
My darling I need you
To call my own
And never do wrong
To hold in mine
Your little hand
I’ll know too soon
That I’ll so pray
Please hold my hand
My dear I was wronger
To try to love two
Ahh uha uha uha uha
Knowing well that my lover
Was just for you
Uh only you
